We will try to develop coding skills and EU citizenship with an engaging

activity about the symbols and values of the EU, in the frame of EU Code

Week and of our etwinning and Erasmus+ project, "Empowering EU

Students and Teachers " and during the celebration of Erasmus Days(13-18

October 2025).

Pre-task activity: worksheets about the EU symbols and values.

The values of the European Union (EU) are respect for human dignity,

freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

The Symbols of the EU are the EU flag, the EU anthem (Ode to Joy" by

Beethoven), the euro, the motto "United in Diversity ", Europe Day(9th May),

European years.

Next, the students will try to recreate the EU flag with coding.

The EU flag has a CIRCLE of 12 GOLD STARS against a blue sky: number

12 is a symbol of perfection, unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples

of Europe, and it is not related to the number (27) of member countries of the

EU.

The pupils will programme the Bluebot to collect 12 stars on the physical mat or

in the Bluebot app (for Windows,on the interactive whiteboard,

www.terrapinlogo.com/downloads.html , or in tablets). Each star will

have a word on it referring to a symbol or value of the EU. After the Bluebot

reaches a star, the students will have to decide if that star is about a value or

a symbol of the EU and then, they will write the word on a carton-table chart

which they will create about the values and symbols of the European Union.

Moreover, the students can create the EU flag by placing 12 stars

symmetrically in a circle on a blue carton.A different version: the teacher asks questions about the values and symbols of

the EU and then, the students will have to programme the Bluebot to go to the

correct star-answer.

Another version (without the Bluebot): students create pictures of EU symbols

and values in zaplycode.it ( it's pixel art). e.g. for democracy, € for euro, =

for equality, for the anthem,...
